Dec 3, 2008 - By both eating from a tainted food supply and taking prescribed medicine we are willingly affecting ourselves on the biological level. Thats how they got us. We do what they want us to do and we thank them for it. Doesn't anyone think they are saps?

Dec 3, 2008 - its important. REALLY REALLY important. when one has a username of AngelicVampire, i see why you dont need sex.
XxAngelicVampirexX Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - hey whats that suppossed to mean?honestly, did you just judge me by a username? thats kinda low.
shovedup Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - Dont tell me thats low. A person with AngelicVampire username couldnt be a 21 year old and above man. If im wrong, im feel sorry for you. Anyway. Like psychetruth said, its not needed for personal survival but the survival of the race. Even masturbation is a form of sex. (with yourself.) Thats why sexual intimacy is not there.

Dec 3, 2008 - Thought-provoking and a nice production - thanks. It's unfortunate that most only click for that lowest level of satisfaction, ie your thumbnail. Like you said though... priorities =)

Dec 3, 2008 - In a different video she cites the unusual or even extreme lengths to which people will go to have a transcendant experience. But those experiences are often achieved by violating lower levels of the heirarchy: sensory overload/deprivation, asceticism, hedonism, etc. It just seems the fundamental principles this video operates on are incongruent with each other, and/or it's treating human experience in an overly simplistic manner.
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - It's not cramming these complex subjects into 10 minutes videos.Maslow discussed the observation that people have transpersonal experiences all over the hierarchy of needs even if they never experienced moments of self actualization. Peak experiences and transpersonal experiences aren't the same thing though. Tranpersonal experiences would often be considered peak experiences but many peak experiences do not have a transpersonal element.
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - The first line of that comment should be, "It's difficult cramming these complex subjects into 10 minutes videos." Anyhoo, transpersonal psychology and humanistic psychology are related but they are two different schools of psychology.
renaissancelitgeek Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - I must have missed the distinction between "Peak" and "transpersonal" experiences; it seemed that they were being described very similarly. I'm not that familiar w/Maslow. There is, it seems, an underlying violation of its own principles. In an effort to break away from Freudian practice (which studied only abnormal psych), Maslow studied only self-actualized people and built a school of psychology built on that...
renaissancelitgeek Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - But how can his brainchild be considered truly "balanced" (as one video claims it is) when it's skewed to the upper end of human experience rather than considering the entire spectrum?
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - The man distinction between self actualization and transpersonal experiences is that self actualization deals with the self and transpersonal experience deals with other people. It's "trans" beyond "personal" self. So transpersonal deals with autistic behavior, empathy, putting as much if not more importance on other people than yourself. Self actualization is like a happy individual. A transcendent person is like a saint or an enlightened being.
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - That is one of the main criticisms of humanistic psychology but that's a major problem with all schools of psychology, they study a limited a field of view. Abnormal psychology doesn't study the sanity. Humanistic psychology doesn't study insanity. What is revolutionary about Maslow's work is he is really the first person to study sanity and happiness in the field. Prior to him, all schools of psychology just ignored those upper levels altogether.

Dec 3, 2008 - I encourage you to watch Eckhart Tolle and his perspective on The Hierarchy of needs.

Dec 3, 2008 - Maslow's theory doesn't seem to work always. Let's take an example:Vincent van Gogh didn't have good relationships with people generally nor women, except his brother and several others for a short period of time. He was extremely poor and often went without eating anything else except drinking a cup of coffee in a day. And PAINTING all the time. He was crazy about it. That was his self-actualisation. So is it about getting used to living that way, that the level of needs lowers down??
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - It's prioritization of needs, not states of consciousness. Everyone has all the needs all the time. It's also a general prioritization or the priority that most people put on the needs. There are of course exceptions but it's the priority that most people use, most of the time.
11Sprite33 Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - i don't understand how the sex is a part of the physiological needs on maslow's hiearchy. also like u said in one of the comments about prioritization of needs, let me just clarify this idea. it is possible to re-arrange the order of the pyramid according to an individual's preferences of life, but is it possible for a person to reach transcendence without the physiological need of sex? i'm just thinking monks right now.
psychetruth Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - It's also a general prioritization or the priority that most people put on the needs. There are of course exceptions but it's the priority that most people use, most of the time. One only has to look at the animal kingdom see that sex is biological need hard wired into all species. Yes, people can suppress that need through mental disciplines. Under love/belonging needs, "sexual intimacy" is included. It makes a distinction between merely being horny and a need for actual intimacy.

4tops Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - I don't think Van Gogh can be used as an example of a healthy human. It is clear that his needs where not being met, he was frequently depressed and ended his life. In one of his letters he clearly states that trough the beauty of art he doesn't feel as lonely. Painting could have been his way to compensate the lack of love and connection in his life.
2snipe1 Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - Well sex is a biological function. Sexual Intimicy is a feeling base need. We're evolving to the point, because we are one of the few species of animals to have sex for pleasure, that emotions are playing a big role in sexual selection. Sexual Selection is just biology for traits that get passed on due to a species sexual preference.I don't believe it was designed so people fit into any one "level" on this pyramid, they are just leveled due to their "importance." thus heirarchy.
