This video captures my comments that Aaron0883 deleted from one of his videos. The video that I am responding to is his "Education, parents, objectivism, etc"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSVVppvrfDUAaron's ideas on education are just as typical as they are wrong. A couple years ago, Lisa VanDamme wrote a couple articles for the journal The Objective Standard refuting these ideas, including "The Hierarchy of Knowledge: The Most Neglected Issue in Education" (Spring 2006) and "Teaching Values in the Classroom" (Summer 2006); see http://www.theobjectivestandard.com/topics/education.aspUpdate: I found that I received an update message with Aaron's original response comment, which he deleted:"In theory I would have loved for you to defend one of your claims ... Yet I doubt it could be useful since it seems like you only desire to be condescending and rude."

Aug 3, 2008 - [2] And when your kids are teens or young adults, U would expect them to already be able to take care of themselves in a lot of situations, so U would adopt a more "hands off" S3 approach.

Aug 3, 2008 - [3] I think that if I were a milquetoast parent and strongly believed that it was abhorrent for me to override or veto some not-fully-though-through and potentially-life-imperiling decisions of my kids, my kids could easily grow up to be just like the 20-year-old versions of Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton...but without all that money.

Aug 3, 2008 - A nice public lashing, thanks.

Aug 3, 2008 - Jeez. Why are people so vehemently fighting someone who's pretty close to being an Objectivist, when there are far worse ideas out there and far worse people that one can argue against? This whole Aaron thing has been blown totally out of proportion. People never unleashed this kind of vitriol even against ScientificDiscussion or Azrienoch. Everyone needs to calm the hell down. None of us started out as perfect Objectivists. Some patience would be far more becoming of us.

Aug 3, 2008 - 9s,Generally, I watch neither SD nor Az, so I don't argue against them specifically; although I might in a comment section if they say something interesting. My initial comment to Aaron was after two invitations from him (one on my page, and the other by his putting Rand in the vid tags). My subsequent comment was in response to the evasion exhibited in his reply comment.cont...

Aug 3, 2008 - In general, I see no point in arguing with a D2 other than to treat them as an experimental subject; however, a D1 has a limited basis for engagement. In the case of Aaron, I don't see anything close to being Objectivist in him. It isn't that he has criticized Rand nor that his politics are completely different; it is that his epistemology is so out of whack. I have dealt with this later issue previously and directly with Aaron, and MrC's vids also addressed this issue.cont...

Aug 3, 2008 - Frankly, I find Aaron has more in common with the PoMos.I have treated Aaron more mildly than his ideas merit. Based upon comments that I have made to others, I could have chosen to be harsher with Aaron. After all, I am the guy that commented that PoMos could be assigned mentally retarded guides to help reintroduce them to humanity and reality. cont...
jwoodswce Says:
Aug 3, 2008 - As one of Aaron's primary errors is his failure to validate his deductions against reality, such treatment is not only just, but benevolent; as it offers him the opportunity to correct himself before he experiences the full consequences of his ideas. If it was my intent to 'fight' Aaron, I would simply publicly make fun of his conclusions. :)

Aug 3, 2008 - L,Very true.Another important aspect of Situational Leadership is that it is task oriented, so it recognizes and respects that new tasks require sufficient direction. In the teenager scenario, learning to drive would be an excellent example of a parent needing to remember to be S1 at the beginning.

Aug 3, 2008 - I threw a live snake on a kid who was sitting next to me on a schoolbus once...then his four friends beat the shit out of me. What a horrible memory! Thanks for bringing it up asshole!

Aug 3, 2008 - "In the case of Aaron, I don't see anything close to being Objectivist in him."Amen! And if, as 9 says, "This whole Aaron thing has been blown totally out of proportion," who has blown it? Aaron, I think. And J says, "such treatment is not only just, but benevolent; as it offers him the opportunity to correct himself before he experiences the full consequences of his ideas."Someone who rejects logical analysis THEN ATTACKS the logical person... is a subjectivist. That's the nice word.

Aug 3, 2008 - Wow, for a bunch of "free thinkers" youtube objectivists sure act like slavish yes-men, browbeating this dude in unison with mrcropper.
jwoodswce Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - S, There are a couple of problems with your time line. I corrected Aaron long before I heard of MrC. MrC was done with Aaron before the recent exchange between myself and Aaron. My recent comments to Aaron were invited by Aaron. But then facts never had any relation to your statements, did they? Do they ever?
Sparkygravity Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - wow it'd be really easy to take something out of context in this video, unless I became more familiar with aaron0883 and the apparent abundance of other info.I think your right about Aaron's pursuit of self-education. From my limited perspective of the situation it seems rather stupid of aaron to seek out criticism from you and then get all bent out of shape about it.I can't believe he deleted your comment and his response, it's really rather childish.
Sparkygravity Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - Now concerning the harshness of your response, I don't think it was that harsh, or condescending. But that's my perspective. Aaron obviously couldn't handle it, if he's deleting your comments. But despite the fact that it is not your responsibility to educate or even help Aaron educate himself. I get the sense that he looked up to you, wanted your input, and then because of his own self-faults couldn't handle it and was turned off to your commentary.
Sparkygravity Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - Despite the fact that it is not your responsibility to baby him or anyone else. It is in your own self-interest to keep communicational lines open to those who, despite being less educated, lack rational depth and perhaps ignorant, are working to improve and coalesce their ideas into a rational discourse.I lack perspective on this due to the abundance of context, but it seems like your not helping Aaron, you could baby him, hold his hand, and get him to a place where he could accept criticism.
spayce99 Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - For an Objectivist nine9s you have an intact mind. This is rare and never ceases to challenge my belief that Randists are dishonest, violent school yard bullies.
MrCropper Says:
Aug 4, 2008 - " It is in your own self-interest to keep communicational lines open to those who... are working to improve and coalesce their ideas into a rational discourse."Aaron has proved his total unwillingness to "improve and coalesce" his ideas. In Peikoff's DIM terms, Aaron is an M2, integrated around freedom and emotionalism.

Aug 5, 2008 - ignorant with stupid tendencies. lol that is classic. you should patent that phrase.
legendre007 Says:
Aug 3, 2008 - [1] At 1st, I wondered why U would recommend a business management book instead of a child psychology book. But then I found "situational leadership theory" on Wikipedia, and I can see how it applies to parenting. When U have a baby, U're mostly in the S1 mode, not because being a strict parent makes U a cruel dictator, but because U don't want a baby to hurt herself by sticking a foreign object in her mouth and choking.
